A New Colleague at the Department: Kateřina Masaříková Teaches Czech for Foreigners

Since September, our Department of Slavic Languages has welcomed a new colleague — Kateřina Masaříková, who teaches Czech for Foreigners, that is, Czech as a Foreign Language.

Kateřina graduated from Charles University, earning degrees from both the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Arts, where she studied English and American Studies. She also completed a two-semester advanced training course for teachers of Czech as a Foreign Language, organized by the Institute of Language and Preparatory Studies of the same university.

This unique combination of law and humanities provides Kateřina with a broad and practical perspective — especially valuable when teaching students whose native languages are not Slavic. In such cases, using English as a bridge language helps her clarify complex grammatical concepts with ease.

Having lived in several countries, Kateřina brings an open-minded and culturally rich approach to teaching. She emphasizes a respectful and supportive classroom atmosphere that helps students feel comfortable and inspired to learn.

Outside academia, Kateřina is deeply engaged in volunteer work — she supports Okamžik, an organization assisting the visually impaired, and participates in Letokruh, regularly visiting a nearby nursing home where she reads to elderly people in palliative care.

In her free time, Kateřina enjoys physical work and nature — gardening, working with wood in the forest, or helping on a dairy farm with cows and calves. At home, she is happily accompanied by her two loyal dogs.
